Just wanted to respond to your email about the paychecks for the tournament.  Thanks for the update, I did get mine today.

On a related note, if this needs to be directed towards someone else, please feel free to pass along or tell me where to send it:

I was extremely impressed with everything associated with the tournament.  As an umpire, you couldn't ask for more.  Everyone was very hospitable and I felt taken care of no matter what I might need.  From my perspective, everything was a well-oiled machine.  Very professional and first-class.

Well done, very well done!

I wanted to tell you thanks for everything you have done for me this past years and allowing me the opportunity to grow as an umpire in Colorado. I will be leaving after I work the 4 games for you on Thursday. You say you will pay me my last high school check before I leave and I was just giving you a friendly reminder. Once again thank you for everything. I tried my best to represent myself and your company every time I stepped onto the field.

Great job the last several days working with EJ and Creek to cover all those game at Pomona; especially today!

It was great seeing you yesterday.  I don’t get a chance to umpire very much anymore; so it was a special day for me at such a beautiful field up there at Evergreen.  The teams and the setting was first class!

Thanks and have a great summer,

My family & I are ever so appreciative of the income that you have afforded us.
I haven't had a chance to verify my pay sheet, and, by the way it seems to be in excess.
I'll look at it now .

Ted and Leaders of CSOA,

I would like to thank you tremendously for the plate mechanics clinic this last Sunday at South High School.

Although, I was only able to glean a little over an hour from the expert teachers, I gained much:

(1) Creating a pocket stance once the pitch steps on the rubber
(2) Analyzing the strike zone by the mid section from elbows to bottom small of the knees
(3) Understanding the 30 inches diameter range of home plate using batter box and baseballs
(4) Developing skill in using the catchers glove movement (at catch) to finalize call of pitch (rewarding)
(5) Using vocal inflection to pattern the calls of the pitches (balls/strikes)
(6) Creating a umpires view that sees the ball across the plate even with unique tight batter stances
(7) Giving a strike call simultaneously with the corresponding signal
(8) Knowing when to chase the strike (according to level of play)
(9) Dramatizing appropriately the 3rd call strike - out
(10) Avoiding career ending-risky umpire plate positions and when to wisely use the super stance

The connectedness with other umpires and other professional association made it a worthy time.  Thank you to my wife who allowed us to spend our worship time together later that morning.

Again, I appreciate the learning and believe this will be a great aid to creating great umpiring experiences.  I am better for this!

Jerry,

Thank you for removing me.  I've enjoyed officiating basketball and soccer down here in Texas and the "starting over" as a newbie to the groups was not as painful as I expected.  The assigners here have treated my quite fairly my first year.

Tell Melissa "hi" from me, too, and tell her I am doing fine.  She handled most of the soccer assignments to me from ASO, so even though I don't recall even meeting her in person, she always treated me respectfully, honestly, and generously!  Tell her I appreciate that!  I can easily say that in the 30 years I've officiated, the way she handled soccer assignments with me was tops, and no other assigner in any sport came close to her professionalism and demeanor.

Take care,
Scott Boyd

As always, I am always receptive to any ideas you have and or comments about the league.  Send me an email or call me if you have some comments for me!!  I appreciate those that have already reached out! One thing I might suggest to prevent this kind of problem in the future -- even though in this case it turned out really great that Don and I could work with both of you -- is to confirm with the school ahead of time. When you get the auto-email match reminder from Arbiter, there are usually a few email addresses of people at the school ("Contacts"), as well as your partner's email address ("Officials"). I usually reply to (or forward) that email but change the "To" addresses to be my partner and one of the people from the school. You could send to all the "Contacts" at the school, but that seems like overkill.

One thing I don't like about the email reminder is that it doesn't show the job titles of the Contacts. So to be a little more advanced about it, on your Arbiter assignments page, clicking on either Site or Home for the match shows the job titles. I'll attach a screengrab from one of the matches that we just did. I don't want to bother the Athletic Director, because that person is generally very busy, so I'll email the Athletic Secretary. You could call (you see the phone numbers there), but I usually just email. If you don't get a reply in a couple of days, then you might want to call.

Inline image 1

Not just for you, but the schools LOVE it when you confirm with them this way, because it gives them peace of mind and lets them know you're a professional who's taking this seriously. Reputation is everything in this business.

I think this is especially good to do if you have only lower-level matches. It's pretty easy to see the Varsity matches online, for example at http://www.maxpreps.com/scoreboard/volleyball/state/colorado.htm or at the school's web site.

The Arbiter email reminders arrive about 4 days ahead of the match. An alternative to using that email as your confirmation email (replying or forwarding it) is to just send a from-scratch email earlier -- for example on the weekend before. Sometimes I'll send out confirmation emails on Sunday for all my matches for the upcoming week. So I'm not really consistent -- I've done both. It's probably good to pick one way and always follow it. I guess lately I've been leaning toward relying or forwarding the email reminder, because it contains all the details (date, time, place) already.

Hope this helps! Again, please don't hesitate to let Don or me know if there's anything else we can do.

Larry

As you requested (and being unable to leave this note / info on Arbiter), here is the info for today's Subject game:

3:28p -- Received call from you re: handling DH @ Chatfield HS
3:33p -- Call ended; I immediately left Lakewood HS en route to Chatfield HS
4:04p -- Arrived at Chatfield HS
4:06p -- Walked onto field just as the bottom of the 3rd inning ended

NOTE #1:  Game was tied at regulation and went to the bottom of the 9th inning.

NOTE #2:  Second game played in to the top of the 5th when a lightening strike was recorded as "within .5 miles" at 7:45p.  I immediately cleared the field and brought the coaches together to discuss situation.  It was agreed that we would wait until 8:15p and assess the light (given clouds, sunset and no field lights).  At 8:05 another lightening strike was recorded "within .5 miles".  I brought the coaches together and let them know that given the last lightening strike, as well as the (lack of adequate) lighting situation, that I was calling the game (as a 30-minute wait from that point would yield inadequate lighting to safely continue the game.

At this moment, it's 8:35p and the lighting, in fact, IS inadequate to have safely continued play.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHEN YOU RECEIVE THIS EMAIL SO I WILL KNOW MY RESPONSIBILITY HAS BEEN FULFILLED.

Thank you.

Hi Jerry and Melissa

I was scheduled to work Game 13590 today between Grandview White and Columbine with Ronald House. I was asked if I would go referee that game, so I agreed to and traveled to CT and reffed an ironman and Ron did the same at Grandview. I had the pleasure of working your reassigned girls sophomore soccer game today at Vista Peak.  For that level, it was well-played and well-coached on both sides.  In fact, it was so even that we decided to allow the teams to decide the 0-0 tie in overtime (Grandview scored in the first OT period).

As one who coached soccer for 30 years and wrestling for 40 years, as well as officiated for four decades, I do this work to stay connected to the spirit of the game and give back to the coaches and athletes.  Your sophomore girls displayed sportsmanship, effort, and heart.  Especially I was impressed with the patience and directed position coaching by the knowledgeable Grandview coaches, much higher than generally seen at this level, where the teaching should happen first.  These coaches provided positive encouragement and offered simple corrections which the players could easily understand.  For players on the bench, the coaches took advantage of situations on the field as teaching opportunities.  Jonathan and I appreciate the respect your coaches showed toward the officials, redirecting players to what they could do on the field, not objecting to calls which they could not change.  Please share my comments with your coaching staff.

On a related note, I have noted the dedicated efforts of your young wrestlers throughout the winter at weekend youth tournaments.  On April 23-24, I was head official for the RMN Aztec Warrior Championship in New Mexico, where your youth wrestling group proudly took home the team trophy.  One of your senior wrestlers, shows maturity and responsibility in working with me as an official in training for the spring freestyle tournaments.

Thank you for this opportunity, Bill

He really understood what the Unify games are all about and I could tell that he thought this was a very endearing event. He mentioned that he would love to be able to do this again, so next year, if you somehow give preference for these games, I would love to see him at our school again.
Thanks!

Hi Everyone,

I started officiating basketball again this season, and I am so excited to start working high school games next year.  I will be joining you all on the hardwood.  Most of you know that I officiate football and baseball, but not many of you know that I also officiate softball, basketball and volleyball; just not at such a high level.

So far, I have worked 10 basketball games this new year, and each one I learned something new!  In fact, every time I officiate any sport, I always learn something new.  That never changes, even after 37 years of officiating!

Here are some of the reasons why I officiate:
  • Physical Fitness - Being a sports official is a great way to stay in shape.
  • Meet New Friends - I love to build relationships with all the officials who only know ASO, and not Jerry.
  • Competition - Vince Lombardi said, "Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence."
  • Extra Money - Everyone could use more of this !!

Do The Little Things to make your officiating experience error free.

Bad experiences can be avoided when the scheduled officials do the little things.

  • Did you communicate with the home school so you can confirm game details and build rapport?
  • Did you communicate with the home school to avoid traveling to a game that has been changed or canceled?
  • Did you communicate with your partners so you can confirm transportation and pre-game responsibilities?
  • Did you communicate with your partners so they show up and you do not have work alone or with a shortened crew?
  • Did you get directions so you show up at the right place at the right time?
  • Did you arrive at your assignment early so you can perform all your pre-game duties?

Such a pleasant change from the highly competitive games where everyone seems angry and people are rude and unkind. I imagine most refs don’t care for the middle school games but I’m happy to work them anytime I don’t already have a game scheduled.

My son’s team (Cheyenne Raptors U10) played in your Diamond Classic this past Saturday at Clement Park.  I was the assistant coach for the team.  I wanted to let you know how impressed I was with all of the umpires during the tournament.  All were professional, friendly and did a great job of managing the games but also encouraging and helping the kids.

I was wondering if it would be possible to get the names and email addresses of the two gentlemen that umpired our first game that day at 8:00 a.m.  I had a great conversation with one and wanted to share a story with him.  If that is not possible and I understand if you don’t want to give out the contact information of officials to coaches and parents, would you allow me to send you an email that you would forward on to them?  Also, these two gentlemen were the best umpires for that age group I have ever seen.  Their professionalism was unbelievable and was much appreciated  by our parents and our players.

Thanks again for hosting a great tournament and please let me know if there is a way I could share a story with those two gentlemen.

Also please feel free to share by feedback with them.

Hi Hal,
THANK you for your time and participation in our 3rd Annual Ponderosa Invitational Tournament.  We cannot have a first class tournament without a great field of teams, officials and support from our school administration.  I really do appreciate you for picking out a great field of officials for our event.  I had nothing but positive feedback for that amazing group of guys…they all did a superb job!

We had a lot of competitive games and some that went down to the wire.  As you know by now, Pueblo Central took 1st place by virtue of a  65-59 win over my Ponderosa Mustangs.
I know calling high school basketball in Colorado is not easy and I do appreciate when the officials are consistent and professional.

My squad slipped from being ranked 8th in Colorado to 15th after losing to 6th ranked Pueblo Central in the Championship Game.
Thanks again and we will do it again next year!

Not exactly how I talked to him but close. This is a good man trying his best to get it right in the world. He is working everyday someplace as an official and checks just don’t come fast enough for guys like this as we know!

I also knew he was working with ASO a lot since I see his name a lot on things! So I told him I would talk with you about it and maybe you would get his check out early and then even advance him his pay for future games! I figured he would wait till I did talk to you! I had a busy day yesterday so didn’t call! Anyways!

Your generosity is well known to all of us who know what you are about.

This is another example of the Christian and Christmas spirit that our dad taught us all those years ago! It reminds me of the times he went and bailed former players out of jail or found them jobs or found  ways to help them make it to the next payday without losing their homes or their families!

Or it reminds me of the times he let us come back home when we needed to have a place to stay till our home loans came through or closed or whatever!

HOLLA!!!

Thanks Jerry Mert is smiling !

Good morning Mr.Letofsky,

I am ASO Official, one of you basketball officials for several years. I was working the Schiessler Tournament on Sunday and had a conversation with Mike your brother. I was explaining to him how after being laid off for 6 months, I finally got a job with the State of Colorado. But, unfortunately they only pay once a month. I've being working to get caught up on all my bills, but I'm at the point that my SUV will get repo'd if I don't make a payment ASAP.

Hal, has been great with finding me work and helping me survive. But, I'm still looking for checks from other schools and associations. Yes I'm reaching out to everyone I can. I notice ASO is the only association in Arbiter or refpay that shows a payment going out. THANK YOU!!!

However, Mike mentioned I might be able to do a loan. So, I'm asking if it's possible. By my math, ASO owes me $309 for High school and rec games. The notice in arbiter is for $110. If there is any way to advance me the remaining $189? Then repay the advance when the moneys come in from the schools and recreation Centers,. I would truly appreciate it. My need is to come up with $500 ASAP. Christmas is out this year, but my kids are grown and I'm a very Blessed man to have what I do have.

I appreciate you & your organization for all you've already done for me.

Thank you, Be Blessed.

Please accept my appreciation for YOUR patience, and working with me when I went down with an injury.  I know the loss of an ump that you had counted upon was tough on ASO too.  But ASO hung in there while I healed and was never grumpy about it.  When I returned to action you gave me just enough good work, but not too much that I risked re-injury.  You're a good outfit.

My time here in Colorado has come to an end. I will be discharging from the Army on August 14th. I just wanted to tell you that it has been a pleasure working with your organization (ASO). I have definitely enjoyed how organized you and your team have been in fair scheduling, umpire meetings, as well as the timely payments. I wish I could say the same for some of the other assignors I've worked for but that's just not the case. I appreciate all the time and hard work you put into assigning tournaments instead of just putting 2 umpires on a field and say yeah you can have all the games on that field today; I think it's 5 or 6.

The Triple Crown team has been a pleasure to work with from the site managers, to the fields that hosted us and SOME of the partners I had an opportunity to work with. It made this part time job a lot of fun and the income that comes with it more of a perk than a reward. Thanks for the great experience keep up the good work!

Melissa, Jerry,

I just wanted to pass along some thanks for the things you do.  As you know, just before the wrestling draw in September, I had open heart surgery fixing a leaky valve, doing a single bypass and plugging a whole.  Even though I persisted that I would be ready to officiate once wrestling season began, the powers at be doing the draw were not convinced and were still concerned about my health.  Thus, I did not receive enough varsity matches in the draw this year to even qualify for regional's, let alone being selected.  Through your help, I was able to re-arrange some matches and pick up a few more varsity matches.  The end result is that I was just selected to work the 5A wrestling regional at Ft. Collins HS in a few weeks.  This would not have been possible without your efforts and faith in me.  For that, a big thank you goes out to both of you.

In your line of business you usually only receive the complaints when things do not go right for an individual official.  Not enough times do you get a thank you when it does work out.  Let me make sure you get one now.

As you know, I officiate four sports (baseball, softball, volleyball and wrestling).  I now have been selected to work at least the regional level for large schools in all four of them, plus working state championship games in both baseball and softball.  This selection is a little more special.  It is a long way from having your chest cracked open on an operating table to working a wrestling regional in four short months.  I just want you to know a big part of this success is because of your faith not only in my abilities, but in my insistence that I was physically able to work this level again.  For that I am grateful.

Thanks again.  See you down the road and talk to you soon.

Mike
